On the 12th of April, the French news outlet Le Monde reported that mercenaries from Africa Corps (the successor of the Wagner Group in Africa) had arrived in Niamey. The hundred soldiers are, officially, instructors mandated to help the Nigerien army to deploy an air defence system. Thus, it appears that the West’s fears regarding a Russian military implantation in the country, which has been ruled by a military junta since summer 2023, were indeed founded.
