Seda Suleymanova is a 27-year-old Chechen woman. In 2022, she fled Chechnya to take refuge in St Petersburg after being intimidated and threatened by members of her family. Today, Seda Suleymanova’s case is at the centre of attention in Russia because she was suspiciously arrested by Russian law enforcement agencies, and her friends have had no news of her for several months. Human rights experts have raised the possibility of an “honour killing”, and hope of finding Seda Suleymanova alive diminishes daily. This brief will look at this case, its recent developments and what it reveals about the impunity of honour killings in Chechnya.
