In the first days following the flamboyant resumption of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on October 8, China initially refrained from condemning the actions carried out by Hamas against the Israeli population, which prompted Israeli officials to express their “disappointment” with the lightness of Chinese support for Jerusalem. But following the call of the Chinese special envoy to the Middle East, Zhai Jun, with an Egyptian official (1) and a Palestinian representative (2) on October 10, the mention of the protection of civilian lives made a gradual appearance in his public comments.
