Return of diplomatic tensions in North Macedonia after the victory of the nationalist right

After the legislative elections on May 8, North Macedonia is experiencing a period of increased political and diplomatic tensions. The nationalist right-wing party VMRO-DPMNE won a sweeping victory at both the presidential and legislative levels.

Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, supported by this party, was elected president with nearly 70% of the vote. During her inauguration, she caused a diplomatic crisis by refusing to comply with the Prespa Agreement by omitting “North” from the country’s name, angering Greece and worrying the European Union.
