This week was marked by a series of commemorations. Abkhazia celebrated the 29th anniversary of the entry of Russian peacekeepers into the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz armed conflict. Russian forces arrived in Abkhazia on 21 June 1994 and stayed for 14 years. More than 30,000 Russian peacekeepers took part in “peacekeeping activities”. The commemoration paid tribute in particular to the 117 Russians who died on Abkhazian soil. It was the President of the Republic of Abkhazia himself, Aslan Bjania, who expressed his gratitude and respect to the families of the deceased in front of an official delegation from the Kremlin.
