07/01/2023: Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of violating the ceasefire proposed by Patriarch Kirill – Enzo Padovan

On 7th January, both Ukrainians and Russians accused each other of conducting artillery strikes on the frontline, despite the ceasefire proposition voiced by Patriarch Kirill. This ceasefire announcement (and, by extension, its failure) was commented upon in the international community. On the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website, a statement called the proposition a “coarse attempt by Russian to mask its responsibility”, and “an additional proof of Russia’s cynicism”. In a tweet posted on 6th January, Josep Borrell, high diplomatic representative of the European Union, condemned the truce. “Cynical, unilaterally announced ceasefire is neither serious nor honest”, he stated in his publication.
