While Taiwan’s standing in Latin America has wavered in recent years, the presidential election in Paraguay has given it a diplomatic reprieve. More pronounced support has also been formalized by Swiss parliamentarians, and by the Philippine leader, who continues to deepen his country’s relationship with the United States. These initiatives, while seemingly unrelated, are underpinned by a common dynamic: rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait that are pushing states and non-state actors to take stronger positions ahead of a potential conflict.
