01/23/2023: 160th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising against the Russian Empire. – Emma Chlebowski –

Polish and Lithuanian Presidents Andrzej Duda and Gitanas Nausėda met on 23 January  in Warsaw to commemorate the outbreak of the January Uprising initiated by the Kingdom of Poland and then the Grand Duchy of Lithuania against the Russian Empire on 22 January 1863. The ceremony was a reminder of the historical commitment of Poles, Lithuanians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians against tsarist oppression and for independence (official website of the President of the Republic of Poland).

This year, the commemoration took place in the context of the war in Ukraine. On this occasion, the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Zwarycz, read a letter from the Ukrainian president in which he stated that “160 years ago our peoples stood side by side against Russian imperialism(official website of the President of the Republic of Poland). The issue of Belarus was also mentioned, as the Polish President reminded “(…) I believe that freedom and the will to self-determination will prevail in Belarus as well(Twitter account).
