Ursula Von der Leyen’s Tour of the Western Balkans: What is the Outcome?
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, embarked on a tour from October 23 to 26 across the six Western Balkan countries, an opportunity to underscore her commitment to expanding the European Union to this region. All candidates for EU membership, these countries each occupy a different position along the “finish line,” with varying dynamics and individual prospects.
At a general level, this visit provided an occasion to launch the EU’s “Growth Plan,” a €6 billion package designed to help the six countries meet their reform needs. By the end of the year, five of them are expected to receive an initial payment. Bosnia is the only country excluded, having failed to submit its reform program on time. Ursula von der Leyen also highlighted European investments aimed at promoting clean energy and advancing carbon neutrality.
