What to take away from Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Serbia?
French President Emmanuel Macron visited Belgrade on Thursday, August 29, to sign several agreements with the Serbian government of Aleksandar Vučić before traveling the next day to Novi Sad for a meeting with entrepreneurs at an economic forum focused on artificial intelligence. While the sale of Rafale jets was widely highlighted by the French press, this meeting marked cooperation in many other areas.
This visit had a strong economic dimension, marked by the signing of eleven bilateral agreements. The Rafale sales contract represents a diplomatic success for France, but other agreements were concluded in various fields, such as nuclear energy, the environment, university cooperation, and artificial intelligence, which played a central role during the visit to Novi Sad. France is also committed to providing its expertise in managing the future Belgrade metro, and the two presidents jointly inaugurated the new terminal at Nikola Tesla Airport, built by Vinci. Moreover, this visit helped strengthen ties with a country somewhat isolated in its region. The Balkans are surrounded by European Union member countries, and with the exception of Serbia and possibly the new government of North Macedonia, they are generally pro-European. These agreements thus offered a good opportunity to reattach Serbia to Europe, as the country sometimes tends to turn eastward.
