At a time when the reliability of alliances with the United States is being called into question, in a context marked by the persistence of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, uncertainties are now extending to the Indo-Pacific. Although the countries of the region favor a position of non-alignment, as Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated on March 3, declaring, “We have no intention of taking sides. The most important thing is to maintain unity,” dependence on the United States as the primary military supporter is being re-evaluated.

The U.S. commitment to the Indo-Pacific is raising concerns, particularly in Australia, where delays in the delivery of nuclear submarines under the AUKUS agreement are reigniting debates. In this climate of uncertainty, China has intensified its military presence in the region, conducting exercises in the Tasman Sea earlier this month. Although legal, these deployments come shortly after the visit of U.S. Commander Samuel Paparo, who discussed Washington’s strategic re-engagement with Australia. Facing potential shifts in the region’s security architecture, Canberra remains vigilant and seeks to enhance its preparedness.

Meanwhile, China’s increasing pressure in the South China Sea, not only against Taiwan but also against the Philippines, led the Philippine government to engage in talks with Washington on February 5, 2025. The United States appears to have reiterated its commitment to the 1951 defense treaty. Both countries also emphasized the need to continue joint efforts in the South China Sea.
