On December 9, 2024, at a press conference, US State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said that the United States is ready to take over the training of Ukrainian soldiers and provide them with the necessary weapons if Ukraine changes its mobilisation policy.
“We have had conversations with the Ukrainian government about the security situation they face in the east,” Matthew Miller said. “Ultimately, the decisions about the composition of their military force are ones that the Ukrainians must make for themselves. What we have made clear is that if they generate additional forces to join the fight, we and our allies will be prepared to equip those forces and train them to go into battle.”
His comments come amid a wave of statements by senior U.S. and European officials that they are urging Ukraine to lower its minimum draft age from 25 to 18, in order to rebuild its military. But Ukrainian officials say they have no plans to draft 18-year-olds and are not considering any legislative initiatives to lower the draft age.
