On May 20th, the 5-year term of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ends. He was elected to the highest office of his country on May 20th, 2019, with a score of 73.2% of the vote, leaving his predecessor Petro Poroshenko far behind (24.5%).

Over the next five years, I will do everything so that Ukrainians do not cry”: these are the words from 5 years ago that the newly elected Ukrainian president ended his inaugural speech. The key part of the speech is the promise to end the war in the Donbass region. “Our main task is a ceasefire in Donbass. I have often been asked: what are you prepared to do for a ceasefire? This is a strange question, what are you willing to do for the lives of your loved ones? I can assure you that in order for our heroes to not die again, I am ready for anything and I am definitely not afraid of making difficult decisions, I am ready to lose my popularity if necessary. I am ready to lose my position without hesitation so that peace can be established without losing our territories,” Volodymyr Zelensky said.
