Relations between Türkiye and the European Union are once again strained following the annulment of the university diploma of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, which came the day after he was placed in pre-trial detention on charges of “terrorism,” “corruption,” “extortion”, “money laundering”, and “aiding a terrorist group” due to his electoral alliance with a pro-Kurdish party. This annulment is seen as an attempt to disqualify his candidacy for the presidential election under Article 101 of the Turkish Constitution, which requires a higher education diploma to be eligible for the presidency.

Considered the main political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the mayor of Istanbul was incarcerated on March 23 while awaiting trial for alleged corruption. Numerous protests have erupted in Türkiye and across Europe to denounce this decision. Reactions within European circles are varied. Despite this, cooperation between Türkiye and the European Union on continental security limits the EU countries’ ability to respond fully.
