Turkey and BRICS: Where does Ankara stand in 2025?

As 2025 unfolds, Turkey’s engagement with BRICS has become an increasingly important topic in its foreign policy discussions. Although Ankara was listed among the 13 potential BRICS partner states in late 2024, it has yet to officially confirm its participation.

At a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in February 2025, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted Turkey’s interest in BRICS, while expressing challenges over the EU accession process. Fidan noted that Turkey’s EU membership discussions are currently at a standstill.
