As the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict took place just a few days ago, chosen to commemorate the decisive adoption, on June 19, 2008, of Security Council Resolution S/RES/1820(2008), in which the Council condemned the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war capable of obstructing peacebuilding. It seems necessary to shed light on this scourge that continues to plague human history, the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. In the face of nations and groups using rape as a tactic of terror, what is the role of the United Nations in confronting this assault on human rights and dignity?
