Continually complex relations

Social networks are the theatre of transatlantic diplomatic confrontation. On X, heated exchanges took place on 2 May.

Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, criticised Germany’s domestic intelligence service for describing the AFD as having ‘aspirations against the fundamental liberal and democratic order’. Mr Rubio spoke of ‘tyranny in disguise’. The German Foreign Ministry’s X account quickly replied: “That’s democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough and independent investigation aimed at protecting our Constitution and the rule of law. Independent courts will have the final say. History has taught us that right-wing extremism must be stopped“. European intelligence services are also genuinely concerned about the future of relations with the United States since the start of Donald Trump’s second term in office.
