The instability of Donald Trump’s decisions on tariffs
Regularly threatened with tariffs by the American president, the European Union is trying to defend itself by calling for negotiations. On 25 May, Donald Trump wanted to impose customs duties of 50% on products from the European Union. He then postponed the date to 9 July following a call with the President of the European Commission, as he explained: ‘She just called me and asked for an extension of the 1 June date, and she said she wanted to start serious negotiations’.
Ursula von der Leyen added: ‘The EU and the United States share the largest and closest trading relationship in the world (…) To reach a good agreement, we would need time until 9 July’. Emmanuel Macron said he was ‘confident’ about the outcome of the talks. On the sidelines of the NATO summit, he also said that ‘waging a trade war’ within NATO is an ‘aberration’. Finally, Friedrich Merz criticised the EU’s ‘far too complicated’ approach.
