Central Asia, a region of contested borders
Central Asia’s borders are a legacy of the Russian colonization period in the area. Before the USSR, borders were not drawn. Borders were created as a result of a political will. Stalin launched in the 1920’s a policy of nationalities. His aim was to create administrative borders according to nationalities settled in territories. One country is created by nationality: Kazakhstan for the Kazakhs, Uzbekistan for the Uzbeks and so on. Nevertheless, according to Isabella Damiani, researcher specialized on post-soviet Central Asia, this creation does not fit to the reality of the region because of the mixed populations. There are minorities in all territories. These administrative borders were changed a couple of times during the USSR but were not visible.
