Security cooperation with China
China’s security interests in Central Asia are dominated by geography. Launched in 2022, the Global Security Initiative (GSI) aims to promote an alternative security architecture to that proposed by the West, emphasizing sovereignty, non-interference and regional cooperation. China is using the GSI to expand its security footprint in Central Asia. While Central Asian countries are sensitive to social instability, they are especially close to the Uyghur autonomous region of Xinjiang. Maintaining a degree of regional stability in Central Asia is strategic: on the one hand, China shares 2,800 km of common borders with the countries in the area, and on the other, it would ensure the smooth economic operation of its “Belt Road Initiative”. China is also the leading arms exporter in Central Asia.
