Coup attempt thwarted in Kyrgyzstan ?

On 12 November, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced in a statement that it had arrested 7 individuals for planning a coup in Bishkek, the capital. According to official declarations, “Under the pretext of holding national sports games, [the individuals] intended to incite violence, make unconstitutional demands, destabilize the situation, and prepare for a violent seizure of power on the day of the local elections on 17 November”. The government regularly faces similar incidents. Indeed, there have been two others coup attempts reported this year, on 11 January and 05 July.

Thus, it is not uncommon for the government of the Kyrgyz Republic to announce that it has thwarted attempts to seize power by force, sometimes even in response to simple civil demonstrations. Indeed, the regime often handles such events in a way that allows it to portray them as attempted coups d’état. The individuals involved are then denounced as foreign agents, opposition members, or religious fundamentalists.
