On the 23rd of May, a week after the 33rd Summit of the Arab League, Sergey Lavrov met with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, in Moscow. In July, the two countries will celebrate the 80th anniversary of their relations; their respective Ministers have thus discussed the planning of the upcoming celebrations. Their discussion has also touched upon the current conflicts in the Near East, both in Syria and elsewhere: the Kremlin remains keen on defending Damascus’ interests, and has helped it regain its seat within the Arab League. Thirteen years after the beginning of the Syrian civil war, the alliance between Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin’s regimes remains strong.
