Resolution 2719, Peacekeeping 2.0 Undermined by Political Realities
The implementation of Resolution 2719 on December 27, 2024, was intended to mark a historic turning point in the management of peace operations on the African continent. Driven by the UN’s desire to strengthen the role of the African Union (AU) in handling African conflicts, this resolution embodies the promise of a paradigm shift. The stated goal is to entrust more responsibility to local actors while rethinking the peacekeeping architecture.
In light of the first months of implementation, particularly with the launch of AUSSOM, a preliminary critical assessment of this ambitious reform can now be drawn.
