On October 15th, 2024, a program on the Russian radio station Komsomolskaya Pravda discussed the actions of the Chechen “Akhmat” battalion during the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk, as well as tensions between Russians and Chechens in Anapa. Shortly after, the commander of the Akhmat special forces, Apti Alaudinov, accused journalist Ivan Pankin of inciting ethnic hatred, highlighting the growing concern among Chechen authorities about what they perceive as “Chechenophobia” and, more broadly, discrimination against Caucasian populations in Russia.
