Recent allegations implicating Chechen nationals in an assassination attempt in Uzbekistan have highlighted the complex geopolitical tensions in Central Asia. Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, has strongly disputed the accusations, calling them a “fake news“.
The incident, which took place in October 2024, targeted Komil Allamjonov, a former senior Uzbek official. The Uzbek authorities quickly identified two Chechen suspects, accused of plotting to destabilise the country. Ramzan Kadyrov denied any Chechen involvement, threatening reprisals, which exacerbated tensions and raised concerns about foreign interference in Uzbekistan’s internal affairs.
