On 13 and 14 May, several bilateral talks were held by European Council President Charles Michel with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as a trilateral meeting. The European mediator spoke in a statement on 14 May describing the exchanges as “frank, open and results-oriented” and informing that “leaders [had] agreed on the resumption of bilateral meetings on border issues and highlighting “clear progress in their discussions aimed at unblocking transport and economic links in the region” indicating a rapprochement of positions “on the reopening of rail links to and via Nakhitchevan” . He also announced the release of several detainees in the coming weeks.
