Following weeks of messages and letters exchanges between Iran and the United States, indirect negotiations mediated by Oman began on Saturday, April 12 in Muscat. Steve Witkoff has been sent as the U.S. Special Envoy to West Asia to meet Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. While President Trump proposed direct negotiations in a letter sent on March 12 via the UAE, Iran has agreed only to indirect talks, citing the U.S.’s current approach of maximum pressure and military threats as incompatible with sincere diplomacy. Abbas Araghchi recently confirmed Iran’s proposal and acceptance of indirect, but not direct, negotiations in an article published by The Washington Post on April 8, 2025. According to The Tehran Times, the negotiations will take place in written form, with the Omani Foreign Minister himself serving as the intermediary.

This decision reflects Tehran’s deep mistrust and skepticism regarding the U.S. administration’s intentions, based on past experiences and the ongoing maximum pressure campaign that has preceded diplomatic engagement. Araghchi questioned whether President Trump truly wishes to be remembered as the one who triggers yet another catastrophic and costly war in the region, as occurred previously in Iraq and Afghanistan.
