EU accession talks blocked

On 7 November, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Donald Tusk issued a joint statement making the opening of Georgia’s EU accession talks conditional on substantial reforms. They called for the repeal of recent laws deemed contrary to European values and for transparent investigations into allegations of fraud surrounding the 26 October parliamentary elections. This stance underlines the growing pressure from European partners on Georgia to bring its domestic policies into line with EU democratic standards.

On the same day, Marta Kos, the Slovenian candidate for EU Commissioner for Enlargement, reiterated the EU’s commitment to the enlargement process before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, but made clear that this was conditional on the Georgian government’s commitment to repeal the foreign agents and anti-LGBTQ+ laws, which are considered anti-democratic. She emphasised the EU’s financial support for reforms and civil society in Georgia, describing civil society as a “watchdog” essential for democracy, and encouraged Georgian citizens “not to lose hope” about their European future.

Georgian Prime Minister’s visit to the European Summit

On 7 November, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze attended the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Budapest. Despite diplomatic tensions, he met with some European leaders, including European Council President Charles Michel and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the latter the only one to congratulate Georgian Dream (GD) on its election victory.
