On December 3, 2024, Riyadh hosted the One Water Summit, a major international event organized by Saudi Arabia, France, and Kazakhstan, in partnership with the World Bank. This summit aimed to address global challenges related to water, a resource that is increasingly scarce and contested. Discussions focused on sustainable solutions, such as climate-resilient infrastructure, desalination technologies, and the management of transboundary waters, particularly in sensitive regions like Central Asia.

Kazakhstan highlighted its experience as a country affected by growing water shortages and tensions. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev advocated for stronger regional governance, particularly over shared basins like the Syr Darya and Amu Darya, which are essential for local populations. Additionally, Saudi Arabia announced the creation of an international fund to finance water projects in Africa and Asia, with technical support from the World Bank.
