The International Conference for the Preservation of Glaciers was held this weekend in Dushanbe. From 29 May to 1 June, the capital of Tajikistan hosted this event, organised by the Tajik government, UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Representatives from various branches of the United Nations, government representatives, NGOs and civil parties came together to discuss glaciers and their melting.
Globally, glaciers account for 70% of available freshwater resources. Tajikistan has 14,000 glaciers. They feed the Amu Darya, a vital river for Central Asia. Tajik glaciers contribute 80% of the river’s flow. Therefore, they are essential to the river’s survival.
