On January 26th, the results of the presidential elections in Belarus were announced, giving a very large victory to Alexander Lukashenko, with 86.82% of the vote. In power since 1994, Lukashenko is now embarking on his seventh term, set to last until 2030.
The 2020 elections were marked by violent political repression. As a result, the European Union decided not to recognize Alexander Lukashenko as president. The Belarusian government faces numerous accusations, including a lack of transparency in vote counting, restrictions on candidacies, the repression of opposition movements and the barring of European organisations from observing any stage of the electoral process.
In response, these latest elections have highlighted Belarus’s attempts to hide its flaws by organising an alternative to European observation missions.
