In the aftermath of the turbulent elections in Germany, Friedrich Merz, the future Chancellor, is arguing in favour of a more autonomous European defence, doubting American protection in the face of the Russian threat following the re-election of Donald Trump. He thus clearly differs from the current head of state, Olaf Scholz, particularly on foreign policy issues, which could have major implications.
Unlike Scholz, who has presented himself as the ‘Chancellor of Peace’, Merz is adopting a more proactive stance on military matters.
Post-war Germany, which has based its security on the American umbrella, notably through the deployment of American missiles and the presence of 35,000 soldiers on its soil, has until now been reticent about the idea of strategic autonomy for Europe.
