While Donald Trump seeks to end the conflict in Ukraine, he is accelerating the negotiation process without considering the interests of Ukraine and the European Union. Affected by the conflict and its consequences, the EU is facing a succession of events over just a few days, plunging it into a crisis it can no longer control. So, how is it attempting to remedy the situation, and what are its limitations ?
The return to dialogue between the United States and Russia: a setback for Ukraine and the European Union
On Wednesday, 12 February, Donald Trump stated that he had a ‘long and very productive’ call with Vladimir Putin and announced that negotiations would begin ‘immediately’. On the same day, he also déclared that talks between Russian and US foreign affairs officials would commence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, 17 February, without the presence of Ukrainian and European representatives. These statements shocked Europeans, who were taken by surprise by the announcement.
