As of 5th June 2025, the agreement between the European Union and Ukraine on autonomous trade measures expires. Since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, and to support the Ukrainian economy, the European Union has introduced autonomous trade measures, which consist of a suspension of customs duties on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. These measures have already been extended for one year in 2024 by the European Parliament, but with capping mechanisms for certain products such as poultry, eggs, sugar, and corn. This was done to protect European agricultural markets. But mainly following protests from farmers in the eastern states of the European Union who demanded the reinstatement of the pre-war trade measures. “We stand in solidarity with Ukraine, but we will protect the livelihoods and competitiveness of our farmers,” Hungarian Agriculture Minister István Nagy said in a Facebook post in February 2025.
