30/01/2023 – Belarusian President on official visit to Zimbabwe – Claire Aréthuse –

On January 30, Alexander Lukashenko went to Zimbabwe for a state visit, according to the official website of the President of the Republic of Belarus. This meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa is supposed to deepen diplomatic relations between the two countries, which both have the characteristic of being the subject of European sanctions. Belarussia is indeed criticized for its support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while Zimbabwe is accused of serious human rights breaches.

According to many media, especially in Africa, the two countries are currently isolated on the international scene. They would thus seek to strengthen their cooperation in various fields ranging from agriculture to armaments. A diplomatic rapprochement had already been initiated with the opening of an embassy in the city of Harare by President Alexander Lukashenko, on the occasion of an official visit by the Zimbabwean President to Minsk.

According to the state agency BelTA, the two countries signed an agreement to twin their capitals. The mayor of Minsk, Vladimir Kukharev, was present at the signing.
