European reactions following Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections
Republican Donald Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris on November 5 has prompted measured reactions in the European Union, in contrast to the response to his first election in 2016. European Commission President, Ursula Von Der Leyen, “warmly congratulates” him on X and offers to work “together on a strong transatlantic agenda that continues to meet their [the US’s] expectations”. European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, on X, called on the US to “cooperate to meet unprecedented geopolitical challenges”. A key priority is reconciling mutual interests and minimizing potential disagreements. Trump’s rhetoric during the campaign included threats to reduce aid to Ukraine and impose higher tariffs on European Union imports, raising concerns about future policy directions.
Ursula Von der Leyen reacted on X to the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20: “Best wishes, Mr. President, to Donald Trump on his term as the 47th President of the United States. The EU looks forward to working closely with you to address global challenges. Together, our societies can achieve greater prosperity and strengthen their common security. This is the enduring strength of the transatlantic partnership”.
