New diplomatic developments for 2025

On January 6 and 7, the 30th edition of the Conference of Ambassadors was held at the Élysée Palace in Paris. This annual event brings together all French Ambassadors posted abroad. French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech addressing the international challenges facing French diplomacy and outlined new action points for the Ambassadors. While the speech did not include any explicit measures concerning Japan, it touched on geopolitical and economic issues related to the Indo-Pacific, a strategically important region for both France and Japan and the focus of significant military cooperation between the two nations. Macron stated, “We have enormous potential in the Indo-Pacific, which has enabled us to establish historic defense contracts there“, likely referring to a new partnership involving increased joint military exercises between French and Japanese forces, set to take effect in January 2025. The French Embassy in Japan also emphasized the importance of France’s “international, diplomatic, and military engagement abroad“, reaffirming a commitment to strengthening Franco-Japanese cooperation.
