Romania: A Historic Contract for F-35s
On September 7, the Romanian government reportedly announced the approval of a contract worth €6.5 billion for the purchase of 32 F-35A Lightning II fighter-bombers (equivalent to two squadrons). On September 13, the U.S. Department of State issued a statement approving the potential sale.
This purchase would represent the first phase of a fleet modernization program, decided in 2022, which aims to acquire a total of 48 aircraft. If signed, deliveries are expected to be completed by 2031. In the meantime, Romania will receive 32 F-16 fighter jets purchased from Norway.
According to Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr, the “5th generation F-35s strengthen our country’s strategic position in the region, where we act as NATO partners,” adding that “the strategic partnership with the United States represents a key pillar.”
