- Chinese investment in Morocco :
Boosted by a free trade agreement between Morocco and the European Union that came into force in 2000, Rabat has been seeking to become a hub in the automotive sector for the past twenty years.Over the past decade, Morocco has become an attractive location for a number of companies, particularly Chinese firms.
In April 2024, a Cac40 company director told Le Monde that ‘ the Moroccan Minister for Industry told us that the Chinese were contacting him every day and that we had to wake up before it was too late ’. Indeed, relations between Beijing and Rabat have grown steadily since their first collaboration in 2007. Beijing has become the third-largest investor in the country, and Sino-Moroccan trade will reach $8 billion by 2023. The latter has even surpassed the volume of trade between France and Morocco in 2020-2021.
