  • Sino-Brazilian friendship:

The year 2024 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and China. Chinese President Xi Jinping made a state visit to Brazil on 20 November to strengthen bilateral relations. During their meeting, presidents Xi Jinping and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva agreed to found a ‘community of shared future for a fairer world and a more sustainable planet’, reports Xinhua.

The State visit follows on from the one in 2023, during which some twenty agreements were signed. Symbolising the good economic relations between the two countries, bilateral trade between the two countries rose from around 150 billion dollars in 2022 to 181 billion dollars in 2023, an increase of 20% in one year.
The visit led to the signing of 37 bilateral agreements, which Brazilian President Lula described as an ‘extraordinary success’. In areas such as science and technology, communications and sustainable development, the two countries are strengthening their economic ties, and Beijing is reasserting its status as Rio’s leading trading partner.
