  • China-Vietnam latest railroad project

Since the announcement in 2013 by the Chinese President of the ‘New Chinese Silk Roads’, renamed in the meantime BRI (Belt and Road Initiative), China has been multiplying foreign investments in order to extend its power while helping countries to develop.

On 19 February 2025, for example, the Vietnamese parliament passed a law promulgating the construction of a railway line linking the Vietnamese coast to southern China. The line will link the Vietnamese port of Haiphong to the province of Yunnan, via the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

With a project costing more than eight billion dollars, China plans to help its ally by providing loans to participate in the construction of the project. Chinese aid will facilitate the transport of materials from the country’s provinces to companies based in Vietnam, such as Samsung.

Under the BRI, projects like this have multiplied and China’s influence on the Asian continent has grown steadily as the various infrastructure projects have developed. In fact, China helped Laos in 2021 with a railway project to link Vientiane in Laos with Kunming in what is now Yunnan province.
