Dear EurasiaPeace readers,
Welcome to our monthly newsletter on “Chinese Influence in Southeast Asia.” This report will focus on the relations between China and the various ASEAN member countries. Happy reading!
China-Malaysia:
On September 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with the King of Malaysia in Beijing to strengthen relations between China and Malaysia. This meeting coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Xi expressed his desire to elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level, particularly through key projects like the new Silk Roads. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation in areas such as agriculture, poverty reduction, the digital economy, and new energy sources. As key players in the Asia-Pacific region, China and Malaysia need to enhance their coordination on international issues to promote regional peace and stability.
China-ASEAN:
Trade between China and ASEAN is experiencing strong growth, supported by close geographical and cultural ties. China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner for 15 years, and vice versa for 4 years. In 2023, exchanges reached 6.41 trillion yuan. The technology and agro-food sectors are particularly dynamic, with increasing participation from private enterprises. Customs innovations are accelerating trade. China and ASEAN aim for enhanced economic integration for a prosperous shared future.
