May was marked by recently re-elected President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Beijing on the 16th and 17th of the month. Significantly, the visit marked the Russian president’s first foreign trip, and cemented the trends foreseen during Sergei Lavrov’s meetings with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi last month, particularly in terms of trade cooperation. Vladimir Putin’s delegation included his Finance Minister, Anton Siluanov, the Governor of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, and the CEOs of several major Russian companies, including German Gref (Sberbank), Andrei Kostin (VTB) and Leonid Mikhelson (Novatek), among others. Indeed, the main focus of the visit seems to have been reaching agreement on the construction of a new pipeline carrying gas from Siberia to China, through Mongolia, the “Power of Siberia-2” project, which could eventually carry oil as well via a parallel canal.
