– China – Russia and Central Asia Relations, Belt and Road Initiative in Central Asia – Emilien Kauffmann

– Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday. During the meeting, the strategic continuity of the Sino-Russian partnership was discussed, with a view to “friendship, cooperation and peace“. China says it is ready to work with Russia and supports President Putin’s continued rule and hopes that Russians will support Putin in the upcoming elections. Indeed, while President Xi is slowly beginning to look towards Taiwan, Russia is opposed to any form of independence for the island. But there is in this cooperation the creation by Russia of a strong dependence on China and other Asian countries as these are the only economic opportunities since the sanctions due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, thus explaining its support to the Chinese position.
