  • Cyber espionage

China’s ambassador to the Czech Republic was summoned on Wednesday 28 May after a cyber attack targeted the Czech foreign ministry. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that the attack began in 2022 and targeted ‘one of the ministry’s unclassified networks’.

The malicious activity was perpetrated by the computer espionage actor APT31, which is publicly associated with the Chinese Ministry of State Security,’ the ministry added. Attacks against democratic institutions have already been attributed to it by several Western countries, including France. The Americans claim that the hacking operations supported by China are the largest in the world.

Through its embassy, Beijing has rejected the ‘unfounded’ accusations and ‘slander by the Czech Republic’.

  • Sino-Cambodian military exercise

Cambodia and China began their largest joint military exercise, (dubbed ‘Golden Dragon’) on May 14 involving advanced Chinese military equipment, including artillery, warships and robotic fighting dogs. Nearly 900 Chinese military personnel and more than 1,300 Cambodian soldiers are taking part in the exercises, which will run until 28 May, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) said in a statement.
