Security, an important issue for the Central Asian region
On the sidelines of the first summit between the European Union and the Central Asian republics, Uzbek president Shavkat Mirziyoyev gave an interview to European media Euronews. Among the issues of cooperation relating to security in the region, the subject of relations with the Afghan government is a sensitive one. Indeed, the question of the nature of relations to be maintained is a bone of contention between Central Asian governments. According to the Uzbek president, “Afghanistan is a key region in the country’s foreign policy. Uzbekistan’s approach to Afghanistan is pragmatic and strategic in the long term. We have never closed the door or turned our back on our neighbor“. Infrastructure and economic cooperation projects, notably in cooperation with the European Union, must therefore include Afghanistan, and also be developed on its national territory.
